As a performer and applied music teacher I have experienced myself and taught performers who have experienced either chronic or specific injuries related to performing and practicing. The injuries and chronic problems that I have seen could in most cases have been prevented and/or rehabilitated with best practices in the use of the body and management of stress as experienced in the performing artists activities.

Musicians experiencing these problems often incur extend disruption in their performance career, resulting in periods of unemployment and escalated health costs. Because many performing musicians have limited access to adequate health care, I feel the area of performance health is of vital importance in preventing, rehabilitating and extending the life of performing artist careers.

There are established methods of body awareness and use that have been available to the elite performers for decades which are now becoming more widely available and recognized under the field of Performance Health. These include the Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais method and Body Mapping. I have chosen to persue certification in the technique of Body Mapping and have begun to incorporate this into my private lessons.

I began my training in Body Mapping with Andover Educators(http://www.bodymap.org) in 2009 , the organization which certifies this technique.

The mission of Andover Educators is to put music training on a secure somatic foundation so that all musicians, amateur and professional alike, may play free of pain and injury and with increasing enjoyment and skill. To this end it is the mission of Andover Educators to create a network of Certified Teachers actively teaching the course What Every Musician Needs to Know about the Body designed by Barbara Conable.

The information provided in the course and text What Every Musician Needs to Know about the Body is precisely the information needed by musicians to prevent pain and injury and to promote excellence in practicing and performing. What Every Musician Needs to Know about the Body is a six hour course designed to give specific, clear information about the body to musicians, with an emphasis on integrating that information immediately into the musician's body map. The breakthrough of Body Mapping is the realization that we move based on how we think we are put together rather than how we are actually constructed. With the specialized information in the Andover Educators course musicians not only learn the truth about how their bodies work in movement, but also how to develop an embodied attention.

As my training advances, I will soon be offering full courses in body mapping for musicians as well as targeted training by request.
